Psychiatric Hospital staff embrace training

One hundred and ten nurses and general staff members at the Psychiatric Hospital have completed training in Basic Life Support, Heart Saver First Aid and Basic Tactical Defence and Restraint. These areas were identified as being urgent and critical towards ensuring the safety of both staff and patients.

On Monday, Minister of Health John Boyce congratulated the participants, during the certificate presentation ceremony held at the Black Rock, St, Michael institution.

He recalled that the Psychiatric Hospital submitted a training proposal to the Ministry of Labour, Social Security, and Human Resource Development for assistance in funding the programmes, and through the Human Resource Strategy initiative, the hospital was granted the sum of $35 000 00 to support various training programmes.

“Let me also express my appreciation for the Ministry of Labour, Social Security, and Human Resource Development, which provided the funding for the training under the Barbados Human Resource Development Strategy.

“This strategy has been supported through grants from the European Union and technical assistance and loans from the Caribbean Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank,” Boyce acknowledged.

“A primary goal of the Human Resource Development Strategy is the “Creation of an enabling environment for human resource development through institutional strengthening and capacity building.

“The creation of an enabling environment involves creating an effective enabling environment for human capacity development, including the strengthening of the capacity of critical public sector agencies to develop, implement, and monitor sector policies and programmes in human resource and skills development”.

According to him, the training of health care professionals continues to be a major emphasis of the Ministry of Health.

He said that not only is the Psychiatric Hospital benefiting from the Ministry of Health’s policy on training, but the Barbados Community College continues to offer programmes in General Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Community Health Nursing, Environmental Health, Medical Laboratory Technicians, to name a few.

“The type and content of courses continues to be reviewed by a joint committee between the BCC and MOH. The goal of the continuous review is to ensure relevance and the highest quality of care outputs for Barbadians,” Boyce stressed. (TL)
