Play park coming

Plans are in the pipeline to build a play park for the St. Matthew’s Primary School.

Word of this has come from President of the St. Matthew’s Old Scholars and Friends Association, Monica Hendricks. She made the disclosure while delivering remarks at the Association’s 15th Anniversary Awards Luncheon, which took place at the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa on Sunday afternoon.
Hendricks noted that while the challenging economic environment has hindered the Association’s ability to do the level of work it did between 2005 and 2010, the park remains one of their goals.

“We promised the former president that we will build a play park for the school, or have one erected. We sought permission from Government and they have given us the OK, so it is one of the things we have on agenda that we would like to accomplish,” she said.

She told the gathering, that in the 15 years the Association has been in existence, they have raised funds through various activities including cake sales, which were used to assist persons and entities not only at the local level, but beyond these shores as well.

“The Association has donated to school, church and community. To fire victims, to hurricane disasters in Grenada and Dominica, emergency appeals to persons needing surgery overseas, such as Kerwyn Deshong and Lewis… Donations were also made to a
nursing home, which was at one time located in Friendly Hall; it is no longer there,” she said. She added, “The Association has awarded scholarships to four students from the school. One student we actually awarded her a scholarship from the time she went into secondary school until she completed.”

The president explained that while a lack of funds has prevented other students benefitting in a similar way, the Association has donated $1 000 to three other students.

Her comments came as she lamented that the organisation’s membership, which grew from 19 at its inception to as many as 55 at one time, has declined in recent years. Despite this drop in
support, she maintains those who remain are committed to continuing the good work they do. (JRT)
