Patching programme bearing results

THE pothole ridden section of Goodland Road in St. Michael, which was a construction zone on Monday, has been transformed less than 24 hours later.

Minister of Transport and Works, Michael Lashley, was once again on the scene overseeing the work and said he was satisfied by the quality of the work carried out by the team. He also thanked the supervisors, technical officers as well as members of the community for their input as the pothole patching programme continues around the island.

On Monday when the media caught up with the Minister and other senior technical officials, the top surface was being removed by workmen before being scraped by a bobcat. Minister Lashley explained that the work being carried out was a continuation of a road patching programme, which started back in November because of heavy rainfall which adversely affected several of the island’s roads.

He said work had to be put on pause because the contractor from which the MTW sources its hot asphalt mix went on vacation and returned this week.

In addition to the work being carried out in Fairfield and Goodland, he revealed that private contractor C.O. Williams was also carrying out work in Porters and Seaview. “We have had a lot of potholes already years ago, it’s nothing new, but we are respon-sible for the highways and we will do what we are required to do,” he assured.

The Minister also revealed that $1 million has been earmarked for the patching programme and an additional $4 million for its Mill and Pave programme, which includes longer stretches of road. (JH)
