Queen’s College (QC) Principal, David Browne (left), presenting a framed photo with signatures and tributes from all of the QC staff to retired librarian, Margaret Aimey, at the Queen’s College Retirement Function on Saturday night, at the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa.

Outstanding employee celebrated

“An outstanding servant of the educational sector in Barbados.

“As Clerk Typist in the Principal’s office, she was faced with performing unfamiliar duties. Her approach to the upkeep of student records, the preparation of transcripts, preparing correspondence and the associated duties truly reflected upon the character f this outstanding servant of education in this country,” said Secretary Treasurer, Cheryll Harris of now retired Clerk Typist, Joan Aimey.

She said that it was important to pay homage to Aimey because far too often in the education sector when persons are honoured for their contribution to education, it is teachers. However, here is an occasion to pay tribute to a person who did not teach students in the classroom, but nevertheless, made a valuable contribution to the development of the students.

“Many times we neglect to recognise persons outside of teaching for their contribution to the success of the nation’s children. Tonight however, I ask you to show your appreciation to Mrs. Aimey for her outstanding contribution to education at Queen’s College and by extension, the development of the country.”

Aimey was also proactive in all her endeavours, said Harris. “I can remember her preparing the booklets for Speech Days and Prize Giving Ceremonies over the years. She was always ahead with preparations – typing, proof reading, double checking and making sure that the staff information was accurate; printing, liaising with staff in my office and then reminding me of what had to be done to complete the process. I am sure that the Principal will also attest to the fact that Mrs. Aimey performed her duties with a high degree of professionalism. She even took the responsibility of mentoring her replacement.

Aimey fostered a good relationship with staff, students and their parents alike and made sure that in the performance of her duties, she never let anyone take advantage of her.

“The staff and students have missed you Mrs. Aimey. Your relationship with the teaching staff was excellent and you have also fostered beautiful relationships with some parents… Don’t be fooled into thinking that Joan in doing her job, sat back and allowed persons to walk over her. Soft spoken; she was, but never afraid to express her feelings on matters that affected her.” (PJT)
