New home needed

THE Cancer Support Services is in need of a new home.

Executive Director of Cancer Support Services, Jan Lynton, told The Barbados Advocate yesterday that the organisation is in need of more space to accommodate its expanding services.

She said the organisation which is committed through a spirit of volunteerism to the care of persons with cancer and to bring comfort and support to the affected relatives and dependants, current, rented, Belmont Road, St Michael location is no longer sufficient space.

This is why, Lynton is appealing to corporate Barbados to assist in the effort of making it possible for Cancer Support Services to move to a bigger space.

“We are looking to have fundraising drives, for corporate Barbados to come on board to help us to acquire a place where we can have this project done in a more comfortable setting.

“We really need a new location. . .We do counselling and we just adopted Ward C12 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and the hospital will refer newly diagnosed patients to our counsellor,” Lynton said.

Cancer Support Services currently offers counselling, a daily visit by two members to Ward C12 at QEH to take care of patients basic needs, a loan service of wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, commodes and bed pans to patients, educational materials to families interested in learning more about their relative’s condition, a podiatrist to give foot care to the patients on Ward C12, and a barber to shave the males and cut the patients’ hair on that Ward.

The organisation’s services also includes conducting annual public education activities to educate targeted communities about early detection and prevention of cancer. Cancer Support Services also participates in health fairs and other avenues to disseminate information about cancer.
“We have a lot going on. We are appealing now because we realise we have outgrown here, as it relates to parking and everything. We are looking around. . .,” Lynton explained. (AH)
