Member of Parliament for Christ Church South, Ralph Thorne as he speaks to the media.

Neighbours’ efforts lauded

Residents of Christ Church South have stepped up to give their neighbours whose properties were damaged during the passage of Hurricane Elsa a helping hand.

This was revealed by Member of Parliament for that constituency, Ralph Thorne as he spoke to the media recently. He said though “most of the housing has held in tack” throughout the constituency there were “about ten houses that are severe in that they have lost roofs. We had a lot of other structural damages to fences”.

“I am extremely proud to represent a constituency that is displaying a level of self-sufficiency that is admirable. To most of the houses that we have gone to, we have had volunteers from within the constituency- carpenters, masons, electricians [and] painters, donating and volunteering their services in the cause of repairs.”

He continued, “So we don’t have a labour shortage in Christ Church South and having that liberal supply of labour, we have had a supply of labour that is also compassionate. They have not asked for any money. They have told me that [and] they have put that on permanent record that the carpenters who live in the area are donating their labour to the cause.”

Thorne, along with Minister of Home Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams and Minister of Environment and National Beautification, Adrian Forde, on Sunday attended the thanksgiving service at the Cathedral Church of Jerusalem in Ealing Grove, Christ Church. Seventy- three persons from various constituencies whose property were damage during the Hurricane are temporarily being housed on the compound at this location which is owned by this spiritual baptist church.

He praised the church for graciously assisting the 73 individuals.

“I could not have missed this event to come here today [Sunday] to express deepest gratitude for what this church has done. There is no more genuine involvement in a community than to see people in distress and to offer them an inn to sleep, to eat and to do all things that families do.”(MG)
