Monkeys creating headaches for farmers

Monkeys are becoming more than just a nuisance, as they are destroying crops and leading to big losses for farmers.

President of the Barbados Association of Retailers, Vendors and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN), Alistair Alexander, raised this concern recently, while calling for something to be done about the animals as economic losses by farmers are on the rise.

“Right now the biggest problem that farmers have is with the monkey – we would like something done with the monkeys. I know that they want to be humane towards the monkeys, but it is very clear and I think that I would have the support of the farming community that some of these monkeys have to be actually eliminated.

“Everybody complain for monkeys; the monkeys are destroying crops…Even people who are planting their little kitchen gardens are complaining about the destruction caused by monkeys,” he lamented.

“It is time to do something about them; we have to take strong action or we are wasting time. So we have to decide whether it is the monkeys or agriculture. Farmers are losing thousands; they are losing a lot.”
