Mikey – The new Party Monarch King accepts his trophy from Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports, John KIng.

Mikey takes Party Monarch title

In the early hours of Monday morning Michael “Mikey” Mercer was crowned the 2018 Party Monarch King. While many of the audience members who were polled believed that former King Lil Rick had done enough to secure his crown for a three-peat – that was not indeed the case. In fact he was relegated to third place after he was inched out by Shane “Stiffy” Atkinson by a mere two points.

This party monarch final lacked the usual hype that is synonymous with the competition. The general complaint was this was the first time that the attendees were hearing many of the songs. This resulted in the crowd simply standing and observing the performances of the first two artistes. Chrissy D opened the show with “Rum and Bass” and she showcased a similar confidence that saw her advance to the final round. However her vocals were not as strong as they were at that stage. Fellow first timer Ashawnya also seemed to be suffering some technical problems, as she was barely audible over the music.

It was Stiffy who finally managed to bring the crowd alive with “Lies” as he got them involved in his energetic performance.

Mac Fingall did not pack as much punch as anticipated. His “Blows” did not have the traditional party vibe and may not have resonated with the younger members of the audience. Blood and iWeb’s introductory video presentation which incorporated snippets of local viral videos had the crowd in stitches. However, their “Wild West” theme which saw them bedecked in full cowboy garb did not manage to get them in the top four.

The spectators were eagerly anticipating Lil Rick’s “Mother Sally” and though he was a hit with a large portion of the crowd he lacked his usual dynamism so his placing was not truly a shock. His main dancer was clearly having some problems with her skirt and this
detracted from her performance.

Mikey followed on his heels and his performance was pure class. All the components of his presentation came together like clockwork and he is definitely deserving of the title he earned.

Orange-haired songbird Nikita was the third female who participated in this battle. Although she has a beautiful voice her song “Going the Distance” was not impactful.

The ever consistent Mr. Dale managed to snag fourth place with his Wakanda-inspired “Bold and Brave”.

There was an air of camaraderie among the contestants as they hugged Mikey, the new Party Monarch King, offering their congratulations. The former monarch, Lil Rick, even joined him singing his winning song “My Kind Ah Party”. (ST)
