Met Office predicting on and off showers into the weekend

DUE to a tropical wave affecting the island, Barbados experienced some moderate to heavy showers yesterday and the Barbados Met Office is alerting Barbadians that this rainfall activity is expected to continue into today.

“A tropical wave is still affecting the island,” Meteorologist Wayne McGeary told The Barbados Advocate yesterday.

“There is some interaction with the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone and as a result of that, we are experiencing some scattered showers. Some of these are moderate to heavy showers and there is still the potential for thunderstorm activity to occur. These conditions are basically expected to persist into (today, Thursday), as the combination of these two features continue to affect the island,” McGeary said of the wet conditions.

While no weather advisories were issued, the meteorologist noted that if conditions warranted, a flood watch or warning could possibly be issued.

Acknowledging that many Barbadians and visitors alike are looking forward to the climax of the Crop Over Festival this weekend, McGeary suggested that the good news is that whilst there may be some potential shower activity into the weekend, it will likely be nothing excessive.

“At present, the models are suggesting that there will be some moisture which will linger over the area, into the weekend. We are not seeing any excessive moisture levels at this time, but of course, there is still the potential for some showers over the weekend. Nothing excessive, but maybe some on and off showers over the weekend,” McGeary said. (RSM)
