McConney tipped to be next BLP St. Philip West candidate

MINISTER of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology, Senator Kay McConney, has been tipped to be the next Barbados Labour Party candidate for the constituency of St. Philip West.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on Sunday evening during a St. Philip West branch meeting where parliamentary representative John King announced that he will not be contesting the next general election.

Thanking both King and parliamentary representative for the City of Bridgetown, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bostic, who also recently announced that he will not contest his seat for allowing her as leader of the political party to plan out business in an orderly fashion, Prime Minister Mottley said she and King were on the same page as to who should be the next candidate.

Describing Senator McConney as a daughter of St. Philip, Prime Minister Mottley said she has expressed her total willingness and commitment to work in the interest of the parish, where she was born. “And to recognise that having been the recipient of so much from this country, that she wants now to give back in every possible way that she can give back to the people of her nation.”

Highlighting Senator McConney’s many accomplishments in Barbados and abroad, Prime Minister Mottley said: “So my friends, I have tried to lay out for you why I have confidence. And John [King] has confidence. And Mr. President, we will hand it over to you in the branch now to determine whether you have confidence. But if I was a betting woman, I suspect that the branch has mutual confidence as well – for seven years as Barbados’ top diplomat in Toronto, as an international trade negotiator at the World Trade Organisation and senior United Nations representative in Geneva, Switzerland. As an international development consultant, her work on programmes of the Economic Community of West African States was published by the European Commission. She has served as an expert resource, leading capacity building consultancies for international development programmes in the Caribbean, sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development; the United Nations Development Programme; and other international organisations.”
