Liquidation Centre saga continues

Despite still not receiving any payments, it has been brisk activity all week in Bay Street at the Liquidation Centre as the clearing out of the building continued at pace ahead of the upcoming
demolition of the building.

The decades-old business has come to the end of its era and is working to have all remaining products relocated before the structure is brought down.

During last week’s address to the public, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced that the business would be demolished within two weeks to start work on the proposed Hyatt Ziva project – a project which was first put on the books by the previous administration but had been met with roadblock after roadblock. However, it looks to be all systems go as the high-rise hotel is earmarked to break ground in June of this year.

With Prime Minister Mottley announcing the new provisional regime under which the island would be operating during the COVID-19 pandemic, she also revealed that the iconic landmark would be coming down in short order.

However, news reaching The Barbados Advocate is that although Government has legally taken possession of the property, compensation remains outstanding.

The legal saga has been ongoing since last year with the matter awaiting a date with the local Court of Appeals. However, the current climate has made the assignment almost impossible and the government has taken the decision to move forward in the name of progress, in the absence of any payments or deposits toward such.

Having transacted their last business in December of 2019, the last few days have been spent packing and transporting the remaining goods to a holding facility on Fontabelle. However, the
company has suffered additional losses, including not having access to its products. (MP)
