Libraries are important cultural institutions that work not only to provide universal access to information and knowledge, but also preserve the cultural heritage and identity of the communities they serve.

Blackman addressed the congregation and employees of the 170-year-old public institution at the Calvary Moravian Church. She added that over the years, that young families and their children made the library the main place of pleasure.

Also, the Permanent Secretary highlighted the various reading programmes which help to develop nursery to primary school students as well as mothers-to-be. In the areas of culture and technology, she noted the participation of the Service in Junior Kadooment and the free public access to computer services and Wi-Fi. Growing from one Main Library a hundred and seventy years ago, Blackman stated that the National Library Service now has eight additional library branches across the island.

“Public libraries today are more than just physical spaces to store books. As we would have alluded, they provide social living spaces that everyone can make use of,” said Blackman.

During this week, the National Library Service will host a number of ac-tivities, which include the launch of Toddler Time at the Main Library at 10 a.m.; on Tuesday, a Workshop for Senior staff at Tamarind Hall Branch at 10 a.m.; and on Wednesday, there will be a Health Day at the Main Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Their week ends with a launch of a sidewalk footsteps at the main branch on Friday at 10 a.m.
