Lester Vaughan School hosts Gender Day

Over two hundred students of the Lester Vaughan School participated in a personal and professional development programme yesterday.

Known as Gender Day, the deputy principal of Lester Vaughan School, Tanya Harding said the initiative was first conceptualised to help improve fourth form students’ academic and personal outlook. The one day exercise gave students who were separated by gender, an opportunity to dress in work attire and learn how to transform themselves mentally and physically for the world of work.

Harding said teachers will be advising students in subjects such as the appropriate work attire, interview process, personal attitude and etiquette. Additionally, the girls during their session would learn about skin care and make-up, cooking hacks, exercise and stress relief.

Meanwhile, one of the teachers and Event committee members, Gilbert Carmichael spoke to The Barbados Advocate about the male segment of Gender Day. He highlighted that in addition to teachers providing information about their professional development, the male students also learned about male sexuality, Man Talk-Debunking the Myth, nutrition, diet, exercise and the Power of Choice with Errol Griffith. The boys session was entitled, “Man Up! Rise to the Challenge”.

Last year, the school organised a similar exercise for fifth form students and the Deputy Principal said the activity was well received and met with the school’s expectation.
