Leadership is key

Last week, the inaugural Global Leadership Summit was held in Barbados at Mpower Complex, which was well attended by Barbadians taking advice from ten major global leaders. The Summit was a two-day event telecast in HD from Willow’s Campus Chicago.

Bill Hybels, Senior Pastor of Willow Creek Community Church, while speaking via teleconferencing believes that Leadership matters. “We need to get better and find your passion. Life is too short to live empty, pursue your passion,” he urged. The pastor also acknowledged that we all have shattered lenses, but we also need adjustable lenses to change how we think about goals and the need for direction so people can be inspired.

“Every single person in an organisation wants to know how they are doing and not to do so is cruel and unusual punishment. It may be additional work, but it will let the individuals know if they are thriving, healthy or underperforming,” it was explained.

Another speaker, Melinda Gates in her key learning points noted that, “All lives are of equal value... we need to treat them as equal and make all the right investments. Make decisions now with the future in mind. If you get the best out of people, you get the best out of teams and you get the best end results. Live out your values.”

Gates also spoke about making time for family and maintaining those relationships, while emphasising that one individual can make the difference in a person’s life.

She advised those in attendance to develop healthy practices like prayer and times of solitude. “Leadership gives back and influences others to do the same,” she further stated, while noting that you must “do things that build people’s lives”.

Ronnie Quimby, Chairman of Leadership Summit Barbados Inc. also pointed out that, “You are today’s leaders creating a better tomorrow.”
