Richmark Cave, Physical Education Teacher at the Lawrence T. Gay Primary School, gets a race started during the school’s Fun Walk/Run, held at the NCC’s Botanical Gardens.

Lawrence T. Gay Primary holds Fun Walk/Run to mark thirty-five years

The Lawrence T. Gay Primary School recently held a Fun Walk/Run at the National Conservation Commission’s Botanical Gardens, Codrington, St. Michael, in celebration of the school’s 35th anniversary.

Physical Education Teacher, Richmark Cave told The Barbados Advocate that the fundraising activity was also designed to encourage the young children to embrace and enjoy healthy lifestyles.

“This idea was actually conceptualised by a teacher at the school, Kimberly Hoyte. We are celebrating 35 years at the school this year and she thought it would have been a good idea to have the cross-country run,” he noted.

“What we are having here today – we are having three races (a 200 metres race, a 1K and a 2K) – and we have the Infants, the Lower Juniors and the Upper Juniors who will be participating. We also invited about four schools in the surrounding areas to join us, but unfortunately the majority of them couldn’t make it, but Eagle Hall Primary is bringing 33 students to compete in the different divisions,” he added.

As it relates to the school’s focus on healthy living, Cave remarked, “We know that in Barbados now, we have a lot of diabetes and hypertension, which are all lifestyle diseases. We feel at Lawrence T. Gay, that once you can get these children actively involved from an early age, it’s a way of combatting that, because a large part of government’s money is spent on health care and if we can get the children actively involved, participating, seeing the value of physical activity, it will go a long way in reducing government’s bill on health care.” (RSM)
