Land Registry celebrates 30 years with committed, professional staff

The Land Registry Department has developed into a multimillion dollar revenue earner and it is recognised as one of the most efficient departments in Government.

Minister of Housing, Lands and Rural Development, the Honourable Denis Kellman said this during his remarks at the Abundant Life Assembly on Sunday. The service which celebrated the thirty year anniversary of the department’s existence was lauded by the minister for not only its efficiency but also its committed and professional staff. Earlier, Kellman said the department which is headed by Winston Coppin, Registrar of Titles, originated as a Deeds section under the old Supreme Court registry.

During his remarks, Kellman outlined the roles of the department and he added that no one could have envisioned the development of the registry over the years.

“The Land Registry department continues to excel one step at a time. The latest milestone achieved was that of the collection of stamp duties in June 2017. This important step was aided by increasing efficacy and increasing the amount of revenue collected by that department by the public supporting them,” said Kellman.

Asking the staff who were present for the service to stand, the minister thanked them for their commitment, hard work, service to citizens and visitors and their significant input into our economy and the legal landscape of Barbados over the last thirty years.

Speaking on the future of the department, the minister hinted to virtual access of the Land Registry services.

“I want to assure you that if everything continues to flow, that by the end of the year we would have completed the task of ensuring that with one click, you will be able to see everything pertaining to your land transactions. I think when one considers the economic problems in the world of today, one should recognise that this department is ahead of its time and it is doing the things it has to do, and this department will continue to make Barbados proud,” said Kellman (KPB)
