Junior Calypso Monarch Lunchtime Concert a treat

 

Social commentary comprising a number of topical issues was served hot on Wednesday during the Junior Calypso Monarch Lunchtime Concert.

This midday main course was enjoyed by members of the public who packed the Frank Collymore Hall for the free three-hour show.
 
Taking to the stage during this Central Bank of Barbados and Frank Collymore Hall sponsored event were the sixteen finalists of the 2016 Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch competition. 
 
This Concert, not only gave locals a preview of who will be participating in the heated final upcoming on July 23rd at Kensington Oval, but it gave the young calypsonians an opportunity to perform before campers and visitors to the island.
 
Some of the topics dealt with through catchy songs included child abuse, the impact of the recession on the island and the water woes experience over the past months in sections of Barbados.
 
The contestants of the 8-12 category got the Concert going at 12:15pm. Appearing at position one was Yahadje who stated that having “no dreams or ambitions, ‘Something Wrong Wid Dat’.” She was followed by Browne Star who sang ‘Train We Up’ ; Sarai who ‘Hail De Skipper’; Sanshe who spoke about ‘School Days’ and Dondree singing ‘50 Years Ago’.
 
Calypsonian, A@lee-ahh with much confidence sang ‘Too Young’. While Summa sang ‘Go Away Recession’ as she made it clear that though she doesn’t pay taxes she too felt the impact of the recession on Barbados because they were many things she could no longer enjoy. 
Star Diamond brought the first half to a close with ‘Calypso Queen’. Her entertaining dance moves and her royal wave saw her scoring high marks with the crowd who applauded loudly.
 
The second half of the Concert featured the finalists of the 13-18 category. It was De Mc who begun this half with his performance of ‘Outta Love’. Calypsonians De Overcomer, who performed ‘Beauty, I’m The Beast’, Quinn P rendering ‘De Call’ and Dynamo singing ‘Nice and Slow’ were next to take the stage.
 
They were followed by Raheem whose performance of ‘My Story’ received a thunderous applause and cheers from the audience. He reminded the large crowd in the Frank Collymore Hall that he was not the only one who forgets things sometimes. 
 
Sparkle T, who sang ‘Happy Birthday’, Ranaan who rendered ‘Pick It Up’ and RJ, who performed ‘Barbershop’ brought the event to a close. 
 
The afternoon’s Master of ceremony was Carl “Alff” Padmore.
