Injection wells should be ready by end of May

The highly anticipated deep injection wells being dug in the area of the South Coast Sewage Treatment Plant, in order to create a well field to help alleviate the sewage spills should be ready towards the end of May.

This is according to Director of Engineering at the Barbados Water Authority (BWA), Charles Leslie. He was delivering a presentation at a recently held sensitisation meeting hosted by the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) along with the Barbados Water Authority (BWA), at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel for business owners on the South Coast.
“We have completed three wells so far and we are moving on to the fourth. Starting at the end of May, we should be able to use those wells,” Leslie indicated.

“But our main issue is being able to divert that waste (from the streets on the South Coast). We have the ability to be able to go in and start to fix our mains. The first main we have all of the materials on site and everything, but we cannot start to cut those mains until we can divert that waste,” he stressed.

Giving more details on the diversion system, Leslie noted that an 18 inch pipeline to transfer waste water from the South Coast Sewerage Treatment Plant to the well field is approximately 90% complete. All waste water will be screened at the plant, he noted, before going to the well field. Each well can be isolated for cleaning and rehabilitation and the materials will likely be air lifted and removed to an approved disposal site, he also pointed out.

This comes as the BWA continuously works to alleviate the troublesome South Coast sewage spills which continue to flare up, and as residents, property and business owners on the South Coast seek answers on when they can expect complete relief from the issue at hand.
