Illegal drugs destroyed

The Drug Squad destroyed a large quantity of illegal drugs yesterday, consisting of cocaine, compressed cannabis and cannabis plants.

Speaking from a location that will remain undisclosed, Inspector Stephen Griffith, Acting Public Relations Officer with the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF), noted that whilst it was another step in the fight against illegal drugs, the Force is still working hard to stem the flow of illegal drugs into the country.

“This morning, [yesterday] the police destroyed a number of drugs, cannabis, cocaine and cannabis plants. The total amount of compressed cannabis destroyed was 1 685.34 kilos or 3 707.7 pounds. Cocaine destroyed was 49.94 kilos or 109.8 pounds and the number of cannabis plants destroyed amounted to 11 913 plants, from seedlings (ranging up) to 12 feet tall,” Griffith indicated.

“These matters in the court were adjudicated and a number of these plants also were from various operations by the police, across the island,” he further explained.
Acknowledging that the importation of drugs is still a major concern in Barbados, Griffith noted that the Force will not be resting on its laurels, as it recognises that there is still more work to be done.

“The Drug Squad is still working assiduously to deal with interdiction and the number of drugs that are coming in at the ports, but we are still very successful and we will continue to work hard to rid this country of illegal substances,” the acting police PRO stated.

Griffith meanwhile could not give a comparison of figures to indicate whether the Force had seen an increase or decrease in the quantity of drugs, from the last period in which drugs were destroyed, up to the present time, as he did not have the figures required at hand. (RSM)
