HC continues to excel in external examinations

Academic excellence continues to be the hallmark at Harrison College (HC) with students excelling in both CAPE and the CSEC examinations.

“In the CAPE Unit 1 examinations, it must be noted that we added Applied Mathematics to our subject offerings for the first time, bringing the subjects taken to 20. Seventeen subjects recorded 100 per cent passes including 129 in Communication Studies and 45 in Chemistry. Two subjects recorded between 90 per cent and 99 per cent passes including a class of 123 in Caribbean Studies, while one subject Pure Mathematics recorded 79.6 per cent passes. This resulted in a pass rate of 98.5 per cent with 240 grade ones, 183 grade twos and 113 grade threes. We performed just under our target of 100 per cent at this level, but this was an overall improvement over 2016,” Principal, Juanita Wade stated while delivering her Report at that school’s Speech Day and Prize Giving Ceremony.

It was further revealed that, “In CAPE Unit 2 examinations, special note must be made, that of the 17 subjects taken, 15 subjects recorded 100 per cent passes including 41 students in Physics, 22 in Accounting and 24 in Literatures in English, while the other two subjects recorded passes of between 90 per cent to 99 per cent, including 41 students in Pure Mathematics. The overall pass rate was 99.5 per cent with 102 grade ones, 99 grade twos and 88 grade threes. This result is just shy of our target of 100 per cent and is an improvement over the 2016 results. Once more we must congratulate both teachers and students involved.”

Meanwhile, at the CSEC level, ten of the 20 subjects taken received 100 per cent passes including the newest addition to their curriculum at this exam level, Physical Education. She further revealed that, “Six subjects recorded between 90 per cent and 99 per cent passes including a class of 100 students in Geography; 100 in Physics and 113 in Mathematics. Two subjects recorded passes between 80 per cent and 89 per cent passes including classes of 90 students in Chemistry and 148 in English B. This resulted in a 94.4 per cent pass rate overall with 352 grade ones; 385 grade twos and 292 grade threes. Our aim at all levels is for a pass rate of 100 per cent.

We recognise that students opting to take Additional Mathematics need to be fully aware of the rigorous requirements of this exam before they decide to take it as this subject is more challenging for some students.”
