HC alumni give back

ONE secondary school alumni association has gradually improved their school’s information technology labs over the last two years.

President of the Old Harrisonian Society (OHS), Cameron Sobers, told The Barbados Advocate that over this period, the OHS has installed and maintained 120 computers and completely refurbished three of the labs at Harrison College. This information was given after the OHS’ Founder’s Week Thanksgiving church service at St. Matthias Anglican Church on Sunday. He added that one of the OHS members formed a group, which built a new media centre at the school two to three weeks ago.

Another priority of the OHS is to focus on creative arts and sports. The president highlighted the recently held Mosaic concert, which showcased the talents of the alumni. Sobers explained that the event, which was mainly co-ordinated by the Parent-Teacher Association, was also supported by his organisation. He added that their members provide funding, which goes towards the purchasing of instruments, training and scholarships and he encouraged all former students to give back through their resources or by providing financial support.

The OHS Founder’s Week, which is held during the last week of the school term, usually has its church service followed by various social activities throughout the week. The president announced that on April 6 there will be a Sports Day with the theme, “Bridging the Generations Through Sports”. It will feature athletes of the current school teams against the older OHS members and they will be competing in sports such as basketball, football, cricket and volleyball.

Sobers said that the OHS has 250 members enrolled and their primary mandate is to raise funds to help develop the school, bring the alumni together, assist alumni who are facing challenges and provide them with overseas contacts. There are approximately 2 700 known members in Barbados and the Diaspora.

Fellow Harrisonians can contact the Old Harrisonian Society via their Facebook page or website, kolij.org, which features a donation page highlighting all their present projects. There is also a link to pay membership fees to the organisation. (KPB)
