Governor General visits Gordon Walters Primary

Teachers and students of the Gordon Walters Primary School have been encouraged to work harder to attain success.

The encouragement came from Governor General of Barbados, His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave, as he paid an official visit to the school located in Christ Church, yesterday. Sir Elliott noted that the visit served as his final one for primary schools in that parish and he indicated that by November 7, he should be wrapping up his school visits.

“As you are all aware, the purpose of my visit to the primary schools is to seek to motivate the teachers and the students, so that each party will perform to their maximum, in order that the students who attend here obtain a solid education, which will enable them to play their part in seeking to develop Barbados during the next 50 years,” Sir Elliott said in his address.

“I note with a tinge of regret, that the pass mark in the recent Common Entrance Exam was not brilliant. In English it was 67 per cent and in Maths it was just 41 per cent. I hope that was a temporary lapse and that this school will do much better, next year. I want the teachers to take it to heart and redouble their efforts and students do likewise, ” the Governor General told teachers and students.

The Governor General meanwhile reiterated a message he shares with all students at the schools he visits, for the benefit of pupils at Gordon Walters.

“The message I usually leave with students at the schools I visit, is that they should not engage in drugs, they should not drink alcohol, they shouldn’t use abusive language and the young ladies should not be brawling, but they should seek to become young ladies of class, who respect themselves, so that others may respect them. Boys and girls must also help their parents around the home. Don’t just take your parents for granted. Your parents look after you, so you are called upon to make a serious contribution to your development and maintenance and you are duty-bound to give something in return, by helping them with the work that falls within (your) powers,” Sir Elliott told the students.

The Governor General closed by thanking students for the wonderful entertainment package, put on in his honour. (RSM)
