Gov’t must do better

Leader of the Opposition, Mia Mottley is calling on Government to reveal the results of the tests done on the sea water at Worthing Beach.

Speaking at a mass meeting at Top Rock, Christ Church on Sunday night, Mottley said the public deserves to know what the public health tests done on the water that was sampled last Monday showed and whether the tests for the water closest to the sluice gate could be read, or if it “was off the charts”. She made the comments as she reflected on the beach that was reopened last Thursday after a brief closure due to the water becoming discoloured, which was thought to be due to sewage leaking into the sea. However, Government officials have attributed the discoloration to the drainage of the nearby Graeme Hall Swamp, and have dismissed claims that it was caused by sewage.

Mottley nevertheless maintained that Government needed to do better with respect to sewage treatment as she claimed that the South Coast Sewage Treatment Plant has not worked for almost three years and the Bridgetown Sewage Treatment Plant is not operating at full capacity.
“The Government has to be better by its people than this and this has to do more with poor choices...,” she said.

The Opposition Leader contended, “They have to report to the people not just about the South Coast Sewage Treatment Plant, but about the Bridgetown Sewage Treatment Plant. Many of you may not remember there was a fire at the Bridgetown Sewage Treatment Plant in 2013 and a number of things stopped working.”

Her comments came as she said that the health of the workers at the South Coast plant are at risk and she is questioning what the government has done to protect them and the residents of the surrounding areas.

“I say to you tonight that this problem has to be fixed. We accept that there must be an emergency patching first and then the long term issue… Whether you choose the Chinese to finance it or whoever else, we are only on this earth for a certain period of time given by the Lord, but this island is to exists for other generations,” she stated.
