Principal of the Gordon Greenidge Primary School, Dr. Angela Smith as she spoke with The Barbados Advocate.

Gordon Greenidge Primary celebrates PTA week

This year’s PTA Week of Celebrations at the Gordon Greenidge Primary School ended with a bang as parents and patrons joined their child or ward for the “Bring Your Parent to School” Day at the primary school.

Speaking with The Barbados Advocate following the start of the day’s activities, Principal of the institution, Dr. Angela Smith, expressed that this year, their theme, which was adopted from the theme of Child Month, was “Working together for our children” and explained that it was meant to depict the working together for the brighter future of the nation’s children.

“Today we are culminating our week of activities with Bring Your Parent to School Day and the aim of this is to let parents interact with their children and other children during the day and experience the other activities that the children engage in throughout the day,” she said.

“The highlight of this day is the ‘eat lunch with your parents’ where all family members are invited to come to eat lunch with their children or their wards. So, at lunch today we expect a large attendance. The children will perform for the parents, and we also expect to have some dancers and singers performing and after that the parents will then be free to return to the classroom with the children and engage in the afternoon session.”

The Principal explained that the idea behind this is to bring parents to work with their teachers in partnership for the benefit of the children.

“Feedback for the activity such as this is always excellent, even though most parents cannot take the whole day off, they make sure to spend some time with the children throughout the day,” she said.

“They always bring special lunch for the children and the school takes on like a picnic like atmosphere. We say parents but it’s really family, because we get some grandparents, uncles, aunts and even some cousins coming in to enjoy the day.”

The principal boasted of the success of such a day and revealed that this was currently the ninth year in which they have held such an activity. She noted that they tend to have the lunch period open to parents, but decided that since the school was currently celebrating it’s 25th anniversary, that they would open the whole day to the parents.
