GG to demit office at end of June

Governor General His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave will be demitting office at the end of June.

He revealed this yesterday during his visit to the Haggatt Hall, St. Michael residence of centenarian, Lena Carter. He joined her family and friends for her birthday celebrations.

While sharing his delight at attending the occasion, His Excellency broke the news to the gathering stating, “I want to demit office so that somebody else can have a chance at trying to carry on what is necessary. I love people. I like to see people happy and to make people happy but the job is very challenging, it is very stressful and to do it properly you have to pay very close attention.”

He emphasised that he was not asked to resign from his position but was doing so on his own free will. He also shared his pleasure in being able to visit with centenarians and children during his time as Governor General.

Responding to a remark made by one of centenarian’s daughter about how well he looked, His Excellency with a laugh said, “I look good in the face but I don’t look good in my knees though.”

Back in December, the Head of State hinted that it would be the last time that the patients at the Geriatric Hospital would receive a visit from him in his capacity of Governor General of Barbados. He shared this news as he bid farewell to staff and patients when he officially visited the Beckles Road, St. Michael facility.(MG)
