Foundation School students as they depicted the Christmas Story.

Foundation’s Christmas programme focuses on local traditions

Barbadian traditions came into focus recently as the principal, staff and students of the Christ Church Foundation School held their Christmas Programme, in the school’s auditorium.

The aim of the programme was to get the students in the Christmas spirit, programme chair Ms. Stoute noted. She added that whilst there is often great focus placed on enjoying Christmas traditions practiced elsewhere, a decision was taken to focus on local traditions and as such, the children were reminded throughout the programme about local cuisine, activities and pastimes that truly make “a Bajan Christmas”. They were told that whilst many Barbadians love turkey and ham at Christmas, they also love the traditional dish called jug jug and a good glass of sorrel. Stoute further noted that with regard to activities, the average Barbadian loves to go to church on Christmas morning and then pay a visit to Queen’s Park afterwards, to complete their Christmas morning experience. They later spend the day with family and friends.

Throughout the programme, both teachers and students delivered local offerings consisting of Bajan Christmas songs, dramatic pieces and even a rhythmic dance. Focus was also placed on the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus Christ. Another highlight of the Christmas programme was also the Christmas Tree Decorating Competition which saw two teams vying for the top spot, which was finally designated by school principal, Robert Cumberbatch.
Towards the close of the programme, the principal, staff and students of the Christ Church Foundation School also bid a fond farewell to retiring Spanish teacher Mrs. Moira Graham, who spent approximately 30 years at that educational institution. (RSM)
