Former QC librarian receives respect for being hardworking, thoughtful

“A woman who thought before she spoke”, “someone who loved her job”, “has a love for God” and “who in her spare time could be found in the kitchen or at the sewing machine creating mouth-watering dishes and clothes respectively”.

These are just some of the descriptions that Former Secretary Treasurer, Marcia Alleyne used to describe the now retired librarian, Margaret Aimey at the Queen’s College Retirement Function on Saturday night at the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa.

“Margaret is a person who responds after careful thought. However, relationships have to be built and maintained and respect is earned. Therefore, I made it my business to get to know her as I did all members of staff. Eventually we were able to discuss topics other than work and the caring, kind, intelligent person that she is was revealed to me. It was clear that she loved her God, her family, her church. She also loved cooking, baking and sewing.”

Aimey was also someone who gave her all to her job and whatever task that she was undertaking at the time. “100 per cent. That is what she put into her workday. She never missed an opportunity to set up a display, be it for independence or any other occasion. She taught students how to use the library and when necessary, she would sit with a class.”

Alleyne said that it was not only the students who benefited from her commitment, but their parents as well, who were grateful for the assistance that she gave to their children.

“There are students, past and present who can attest to her assistance with projects and other assignments. Her kindness sometimes went beyond the students of Queen’s College. I am sure that there are others who share my sentiments when I say ‘Margaret thank you for saving our sanity as parents whose children needed to use a book or to get information which you were able to provide.”

Alleyne remarked that when Aimey took over the “Text Book Loan Scheme”, she made sure that the process was easier for the students and their parents as she would have all of the books that they needed tied
together with the student’s name on it ready for collection.

Alleyne stated that after all of this hard work, retirement for Aimey was something that she could look forward to as she gets a well-deserved rest and dedicates her time and energy to the things which matter most – God, church and family. (PJT)
