Entrepreneurs encouraged to make most of social media

Young entrepreneurs were encouraged to take advantage of the social media they so frequently use today, to help grow their businesses.

This advice was given to the young entrepreneurs, who were taking part in the 2018 YES Entrepreneurial Development Training Programme that was held at the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Youth on Saturday morning, by successful business entrepreneur herself, Toni Thorne.

Thorne, who is the Director of Thorne Publishing and Productions, believed that it was important for them to take advantage of social media as it was a tool that could aid in the success of their businesses.
“Make the most of social media!” she urged.

“I see and hear people saying ‘oh, social media? I’m not vain and I’m not about that’ and you may think that makes you sound higher level and all spiritual but it actually makes you sound ignorant because 20 years ago you would never think that you could find information on your phone.”

However, though she is a supporter of social media, she believes that sometimes persons get so distracted by what everybody is saying on social media, that valuable time is lost; time that could be spent working
on and developing your business. She went on to note that persons usually thought that entrepreneurship was a life of glamour and quickly stated that it was not.

“A lot of people think, because of social media, that if you’re an entrepreneur you have a glamorous life. It is not a glamorous life; You work hard and play hard, yes! But there’s a lot that goes into it. Don’t discount the level of hard work that needs to go into it,” she said.

“There’s a very unglamorous part of owning your own business, especially when you have people working for and relying on you.”

She believes that Barbadians need to get focused or else the world is going to pass them by. Thorne believes that Barbadians need to stop waiting for people to give them something and get up and go after their dreams.
