Doyle Offshore Sails shows serious commitment to Barbados

Donville Inniss, Minister of Industry, International Business, Commerce and Small Business Development, thanked Doyle Offshore Sails, manufacturer of yacht sails in Barbados since 1987, for their commitment to industry, the Barbados economy and the society.

However, while speaking last week at the celebration of the expansion of the Doyle manufacturing plant combined with the 30th year of operations in Barbados, the Minister defended the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation.

Inniss contended, “The Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) remains committed to industrial development in Barbados... I want to thank the management and staff of the BIDC… Oftentimes they get a lot of criticism and condemnation, but I’m sure without their genuine partnership with Doyle Offshore Sails, we could not be enjoying the expansion of the business.

“Doyle Offshore Sails is a good corporate citizen and a good tenant of the BIDC... Many criticise the Government, but if tenants do not pay their rent or pay the rent on time, we will not be able to provide the kind of industrial estates that are necessary for business to grow and if we don’t do that, please do not criticise or condemn the Government when we ask all taxpayers to pull their pockets and give a little bit more to help to keep some of these estates and entities afloat…”

He added, “Doyle Offshore Sails Ltd. is a unique company; it shows when individuals have a passion, vision and determination they can move mountains. The fact that 30 years later this company is providing employment for 60 Barbadians is indeed something we all must be very proud of… I am happy to see the expansion for Doyle Offshore Sails.

“I want to thank Doyle because they have been export driven. This country needs to earn foreign exchange; it is the only way we will survive and when you have an entity like Doyle that has export sales amount close to two million US a year, that is a significant amount and one that we are very grateful for...

“Doyle Offshore Sails Ltd. is a shining example of where industry needs to go in Barbados, that is to be more export focused... We need to produce more goods and services in Barbados for an export market and the Government, through the BIDC, has been leading the charge in the last year or so, where we have gone into several markets such as Grenada, St. Lucia, Cuba, etc. We want businesses in Barbados to be more export focused, not sitting down waiting on subsidies from Government, not waiting on grants but believe they can get up and get into other markets…”

General Manger of Doyle Offshore Sails, Dana Seymour, pointed out, “At Doyle Offshore Sails, we manufacture sail boat sails competing in a global market. We have some serious competition in this business; we compete with countries such as India, Indonesia, China, South Africa, etc. It is a global business and the world is really small. We are making sail boat sails for new boats and existing boats; there are a number of different ways of making sails and we have done most of them in 30 years. I am excited about this fourth building… The computer has helped us a lot and being able to advance our technologies has allowed us to open up a new market, which we believe is going to allow us to grow...

“This company has grown to be a world leader in the sailing industry and has been a constant presence in the Six Roads Industrial Park, St. Philip for the past 30 years. We have achieved this with the help of strong management, great employees and a stable economic and physical infrastructure here in Barbados,” the Doyle official highlighted.
