DLP is a united team, says Michael Carrington

Former Speaker of the House of Assembly, attorney-at-law Michael Carrington says the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) is definitely up to the task of governing Barbados for another five years.

He made the comments during the DLP’s live internet broadcast Candidate Speaks from its George Street headquarters on Monday night. Carrington, who is seeking a third term as the Member of Parliament for St. Michael West, as he spoke to work done in areas such as education, renewable energy and housing among others, contended that the DLP’s team, headed by Party Leader and Prime Minister Freundel Stuart are united in their efforts to continue to take this country forward.

“The first thing I would like to say is that we have a leader who is not despotic or power hungry, who has been tried and tested. Now they have thrown everything at our leader, yet he has been able to hold the ship of state together and our united team. We have a team, a good blend of talents, experience and youth. We have a Minister of Finance who decided that he would take the high road; he wouldn’t bring an election type budget, but would take the decisions that are in the best interest of our country. So I feel confident that we have the team to deliver the goods and to keep Barbados on the upward trend,” the St. Michael West candidate added.

“So there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this united team, united behind our leader Mr. Freundel Stuart, is more than able to continue doing the job,” it was further pointed out.

He made the comments while maintaining that in spite of the hand they were dealt, the DLP-led government has managed to “do very well with very little”. Using the example of the $200 million drop in tax revenue on account of a falloff in the international business sector, due to external factors, he said in spite of that, Government has been able to keep the various services Barbadians have become accustomed to going.

“So all I want to say is that going forward, that same kind of team work that has guided us; that same kind of level headedness that has guided the country, that is what we expect to be in place and I look forward to being there to do some more hard work and to reap the benefits of the hard work that we have done,” he stated.
