DLP St. James Central candidate seeking to solve problems within community

One constituency representative will be partnering with the community to solve its problems.

Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) St. James Central candidate, George Connolly spoke about the number of plans, inclusive of a new website which will assist with advancement of his constituents.

Last Thursday, after briefing the media about his first project, coordinating the provision of soil for the Good Shepherd Primary School sporting field, Connolly added that there were plans to build a pavilion.

The local businessman and resident in the constituency said that he had reached out to private sector and identified a contractor about the pending project. In his briefing, he spoke about other areas which his team will be working on within the community.

DEVELOPING SPORTS AND HOUSING INFRASTRUCTURE
Connolly noted that of the eight categories which they are focused on, it included supporting sporting activities, scholarships and providing uniforms for the community’s football team. Additionally, he revealed the formation of habitat committee which will seek to address major issues of housing.

Motioning to the landscape of Fitts Village, the DLP candidate said with natural disasters taking on horrendous energy, looking at the housing stock, there are several people living in homes that are high risk.

“There are several homes that I fear that if you push them too hard they will just fall over. There are several homes where the infrastructure going into those homes are poor and there are several housing areas that are too high cost. So one of the things that we are looking to do with the habitat committee is that houses that are occupied, we are looking to [fix] them up to a building code that it is acceptable, that they can withstand a natural disaster,” said Connolly.

In his plans, he also wanted to look at low income housing projects in the area. Other areas of focus are infrastructural services within the existing household. Connolly made reference to fact that more than ten years ago, the National Petroleum Corporation ran natural gas lines through part of the infrastructure. He noted that at the present moment, ninety per cent of the housing stock’s gas lines are not connected.

“Little things like that where we can bring the cost down to the householder preparing their meals etc. We want to get those things on the ground and our habitat committee is going to deal with that,” said Connolly.

IMPROVING ROADS AND RECREATIONAL AREAS
Addressing the issues with the road network is also on Connolly’s agenda. The business man said that in some areas, roads are great while others are poor. He added that there is a need to look at utility services (water, telephone, electricity) and residents expressed the need for a dog park with a hiking/biking trail.

At the end of his briefing, Connolly mentioned there will be the launch of a new website called ThisisourhomeDLP.com where the eight categories of focus will be placed. The website is expected to be live by weekend. The St. James Central candidate invited persons to visit it and view what is happening in the community, the profile of the candidate and the areas where they can give support.
