DLP confident of return to Government

The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) and its respective members will retain their seats and once again be the ruling administration after the next general election regardless of whenever it is called.

This is the confident declaration that is coming from the General Secretary of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), George Pilgrim who at the time was answering a question from one of the members of the media regarding the poll that was recently conducted by Director of the Caribbean Development Research Services (CADRES), Political Scientist, Peter Wickham earlier this year in relation to the current administration not returning to office at the next general elections.

He stated that they do not believe that this poll is “very scientific.’ However, he respects that Wickham has the right to his own opinion and to conduct whatever poll he wants to.

“The Democratic Labour Party prides itself on managing their affairs in-house because you I suspect were fueled by your activity in the field…Peter Wickham is free to say whatever he wants to say. He is a longstanding pollster. But all of the evidence that we discussed in this very room here suggests otherwise as far as quote unquote seats that the Democratic Labour Party would lose or would win. Okay? So I am optimistic that the Party and the candidates would report to duty whenever elections are called.”

This is why they are not concerned about the results of that poll because ultimately, it is the voters who would determine who would take the helms of the next Government and this why Barbadians must consider all of the issues carefully.

Pilgrim stated that he believes that once they take a good look at all of the programmes and policies that are being presented by the DLP and compare them to those that are being presented by the Opposition, Barbados Labour Party (BLP), they would make the right decision.
“Ultimately, the voters would make the decision on who wins the Government, not a pollster. So we implore the citizens of Barbados – the voters – to look carefully upon the policies that would continue to flow from the Democratic Labour Party; the ones that you are being promised from the Opposition and then you have a chance to make that determination. Ultimately, it is left to the voters.”

He also stated that the press and the way that they report on these policies and programmes would also make a difference in how the general public interprets these matters.

“Yes, I am optimistic that this Cabinet is committed to the development of Barbados. I mean we may not always get it right, but we don’t set out to get it wrong when you think about it. So the whole notion of message sent and message received is always an issue in communication. So when a person from the Democratic Labour Party speaks, he delivers a message. The press has the opportunity to make product of how that message is interpreted and therein lies the conundrum for most people in this decade of communication.” (PJT)
