Director of Nursing Services: Hospital staff committed

Staff of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital have been lauded for being committed and dutiful workers.

The praise came recently from Director of Nursing Services, Bernadette Harris, during a special Cake Cutting Ceremony held to mark the QEH’s 52nd anniversary. During that ceremony, Harris cut the cake with three of four members of staff who were all born in November 1966 and will in turn be celebrating 50 years this month, even as the island celebrates its Golden Jubilee, its 50th Anniversary of Independence.

Harris told The Barbados Advocate that over the years, she has seen growth amongst members of staff, in terms of their level of training and attitude to the job.

“I have seen the hospital move from just doing basic care, to really advanced care like cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, amongst other things and I have seen our staff grow too, from just basic training to (advanced levels). Right now, nursing is one of the professions that the basic requirement (at present) is a Bachelors. So I think there is a bright future ahead for this hospital, when it comes to knowledge and the application of it,” she said.

Acknowledging the buzz in the air surrounding the cake-cutting ceremony, which formed part of the hospital’s week of activities, Harris added, “I find that the staff tend to be very buoyant when it comes to this time of year, because we also celebrate our Hospital Week, as well as the anniversary of Independence and I find that the staff, they are committed, I cannot say less. I find that there is a happiness in the air. It always comes around this time anyhow, so we start Christmas a little early.”

Hospital Week got started on Sunday with a thanksgiving service at the Mount Zion United Holy Church of America, in Wavell Avenue, Black Rock, St. Michael, followed by an official lighting ceremony of the Hospital later that evening. Following this week’s cake cutting ceremony, the week will culminate with activities for the staff and the management and staff will also be showing their appreciation for patients at the hospital.
