Courtesy Garage holds its own in 2016

The automobile market in Barbados remains challenging for new car sales but Courtesy Garage has been able to maintain a strong market share in 2016.

Reporting on testing times, following his company’s annual awards ceremony at the Atlantis Hotel last Friday, Senior General Manager Nicholas said Courtesy was continually innovating to stay in the game and had retained its 25 per cent share of the market largely due to the performance of the Hyundai brand.

“The economy is still tight, with some strong winds about, however we have been prudent in managing our cash and controlling expenses,” he said.

The agents for Nissan, Hyundai, ZNA and Fiat, Mackie said, also managed to grow revenue by 7.7 per cent and were on track in implementing their long-term strategy with regional growth an integral part of the business.

“We see opportunities often where there is adversity and that is how we have been able to succeed. We had no layoffs and we are all working to keep our jobs,” he added.

Mackie further praised management and staff of the Wildey-based dealership, and subsidiary Tropical Battery, for their efforts over another challenging year and suggested that a similar effort will be required in 2017.

During Courtesy Garage’s awards ceremony, Human Resources Manager David Carrington also praised staff for their sterling efforts in difficult times, before close to 50 awards were presented to employees and managers.
Among the awards presented were those for long-service, ranging from ten to 40 years; “Perfect Attendance” ; “Employees of the Year” in nine departments; “Overall Employee of the Year” and “Manager of the Year”.
For 2016, Sonia “Jackie” Green, an Office Administrator with Courtesy-Rent-a-Car, was voted overall Employee Of The Year, while Financial Controller, Andrez Greene, was voted Manager of the Year.

Top employees for 2016 in various departments were: Accounts – Kathyann Bryan; Bodyshop – Pamela Carter; Rentals – Sonia Green; Sales – Lisa Boyce; Workshop – Kenville Best; Service Department – Carlos Best; Tropical Battery – Hinkson Spooner; Parts Department – Leonard Best; and Tyres – Victor Best.

Among the Long-Service Awardees were Diana Sobers (40 years), Michael Best (35 years) and Patrick Thompson, Sam Gaston and Roger Maxwell, all 30 years.
