CONSERVE WATER

Each member of society has to play his or her part to conserve this island’s water supply.

Such a view was expressed by Chief Executive Officer of Earth Smart, George Newton, whose company specialises in distributing eco-friendly, smart energy and water-saving devices.

Newton commended Government for taking action and commencing its mains laying project to replace some of the country’s pipelines. He additionally stated that as
a society “we need to start more efficiency programmes now and not wait until … the well runs dry to address” problems.

“The programmes that the Government has started, I think those are very important, those mains replacement programmes. Without those all our efforts out here would be in vain trying to save on our end, but once we can both work together – the householders and the businesses and whatever industry you are in – conserving water and making more efficient use of it and the mains replacement programmes going together, then we can secure our water supply. But it takes all of us to work, all of us to address the problem,” he stated.

He was speaking to the media yesterday on the side-lines of an interactive session with students of the St. Cyprian’s Preparatory Boys’ School. During this, pupils were given tips on how to conserve water and how to use it more efficiently. Information was also shared about the water cycle; how Barbados’ water is captured and the role the Barbados Water Authority plays in supplying water to schools, businesses and households daily.

Newton pointed out that the day’s session, was “just one of the social programmes that we are going after, and endeavouring to do. We have so far started to target the hotel sector where we go into the hotels and do water efficiency tests for them, basically, just seeing how the water is flowing in their faucets and making suggestions as to different ways that they can reduce their water usage”.
