Comissiong weighs in on Windrush immigrant situation

Meeting today in B’town

SOCIAL activist David Comissiong is weighing in on what he is describing as the recent spate of unlawful and racists detentions, deportations, denial of health care, and dismissals from employment that the current Conservative or Tory government of Britain has ordered.

In a press release, the President of the Clement Payne Movement said the development which has inflicted on long-term second generation Barbadian and other West Indian immigrants’ residents in Britain should be a matter of grave concern to the people and Government of Barbados and to the leadership of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

He said Black Labour Member of Parliament David Lammy has already taken to the floor of the House of Commons to denounce the treatment meted out to black West Indians of the so-called “Windrush Generation” by the Theresa May-led government as racist and shameful.
“And just today – (Thursday the 19th of April), black female MP Diane Abbott used the precincts of the House of Commons to hold a Meeting on the issue with representatives of the black community of Britain.

“The Clement Payne Movement (CPM) of Barbados has already given an undertaking to the United Kingdom Chapter of the Global Afrikan Congress (GAC) that the CPM will be mobilizing solidarity and support efforts from Barbados for the campaign activism that is being pursued by the black British community on this matter,” Comissiong said.

The President said to this end, the Clement Payne Movement will be holding a Community Grounding on this issue at 5 p.m. today, Saturday 21st April 2018 at the Clement Payne Cultural Centre, Crumpton Street, Bridgetown.

The CPM has extended a special invitation to all Barbadian nationals who once resided in the United Kingdom as immigrants to attend the meeting.

“All other persons who are interested in helping to secure the human and civil rights of our Barbadian and West Indian kith and kin in Britain are also invited to attend this important Community Grounding or Meeting,” he said. (AH)
