Combermere teacher suggests ‘no sports’ this term

Teachers at Combermere School are ready to get back into the classrooms.

In fact, one senior teacher who is mindful of the teaching time lost due to the school’s closure since November, is suggesting that the students at Waterford, St. Michael campus not participate in any type of athletics this semester, traditionally known as “sports term”.

This comes from the Reverend Charles Morris, as he reminded members of the media that it was not the fault of teachers that time was missed. “There were real environmental issues in this school making teachers and students sick,” he opined.

“If I was principal, I would not tell parents that the teachers will make up for the time,” he stressed, further suggesting that the school not hold its annual Sports Day and also withdraw from the 2017 Barbados Secondary School Athletics Championships (BSSAC).

“Cancel Sports … I would use that time to make up for all the hours we missed for classes.”

In addition, the outspoken teacher said if he was Principal, he would contact the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) given that the senior students preparing for those upcoming examinations have been disadvantaged.

“If I was principal I would write the local registrar asking if they would consider asking CXC to accommodate the students at Combermere, given all that has happened at the school and set alternative papers for them at a later date,” he said.

After touring the school on Monday to assess the work carried out, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Senator Harcourt Husbands, assured that students will catch up with their studies.

While pointing out that the Ministry was approaching things in stages, he stated “I think we want to get the children back in school and have them settled over the next couple of days, and then I am sure we will be able, working along with the parents and the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU), to come up with a reasonable position to assist students and assist them further in their preparation for their various exams.”
