COB INVESTING IN YOUTH

Some $1.5 M in grants, scholarships

SOME $1.5 million.
That’s the amount the City of Bridgetown Cooperative Credit Union Limited (COB) has awarded in grants, scholarships and other support to several young Barbadians over the years under its CARES (Children Are Really Enthusiastic Savers) programme named after Maxine McClean, a long standing member of the COB.
Making the announcement was Dr. Lynette Holder, the President of the COB at a ceremony at Sandals Royal over the weekend.
Dr. Holder told the function that each year the COB “votes money for the programme to invest in our young people. From primary to secondary and to higher tertiary education.”
The President said that COB does not want to stop there and intends to extend it. “I am satisfied that an investment in our youth is a significant return to our organisation,” she said, promising to take it to a new level. According to her, “COB has been there first and we want to maintain that leadership.” She recalled that in 2005, there were 6,000 CARES accounts.
“I can report that at the last count, April 7, 2022, we had 10,543 savers for this programme,” Dr. Holder said, noting further that there is a market there for the COB to tap into as it goes about broadening the programme. The COB President also
stated that over the years and from inception, they had rebranded the programme.
