Church service celebrates Guyana’s Golden Jubilee

IT is only with unity we can fulfil the goals of our destiny.

This is the emphatic statement from Cita Pilgrim, Consul General of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana in Barbados, during the 50th anniversary church service at the Cathedral of St. Michael and All Angels on Sunday morning.

Guyanese nationals, dressed in their symbolic national colours  of green, yellow, red, black and white, made a special effort to be present for this special church service commemorating Guyana’s 50th anniversary of Independence on May 25, 2016, under the theme ‘Reflect, Celebrate and Inspire’.

Pilgrim noted, “In 1966, Guyanese took hold of their destiny and chartered a course based on the rights of liberty, freedom, equality before the law and respect for the virtues of humanity.

“A course chartered towards building a nation of one people, one nation with one destiny, committed to the inclusion of and co-operation among all our people.”

She pointed out, “It is a reflection that will show as a nation we have suffered challenges and setbacks, but it will also show we have fortitude, courage and determination to overcome these and persevere in our quest for a better future.

“As we approach 50 years of Independence, there is great expectation and hope for the future. We cannot change the past, but we can shape the future. A future which will maintain and enhance our moral values.”

She also emphasised, “A society in which respect for decency and integrity is a norm rather than an exception. A society in which peace and prosperity prevail rather than turmoil and poverty.

“It owes to its citizens at home and abroad a duty to create and maintain a just and righteous society of which they can be proud. A duty to create and maintain a society in which all are enabled to realise their true potential.”

Meanwhile, during the service, various individuals through song, scripture readings and special tributes paid homage to their country.
