Christ Church Girls, Blackman & Gollop take top honours in 11 Plus

Tishani Rhianna Jordan of Christ Church Girl’s and Jovan Alex Linton of Blackman and Gollop Primary have been named as the top girl and boy, respectively, in the 2017 Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination.

Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones made the announcement yesterday on location at the Ministry of Education, as he delivered the results of the exam, which was held on May 2nd this year.

Both students will be attending Queen’s College in September. As the top female and top student, Rhianna Jordan scored a total of 243.70 A, having scored a perfect 100 in Mathematics and 99 in English.

The top boy, Jovan Linton, an early sitter, earned a total score of 243.18 A, having scored 99 in Mathematics and also 99 in English.

Education Minister Ronald Jones meanwhile noted that the Common Entrance Results speak well for the performance of the public primary schools, though he noted that there was a good mix of results between public and private overall.

Jones noted that a total of 3 216 students from 68 public primary schools and 24 private primary schools were registered to write the Common Entrance Exam.

“There were 13 early sitters and all of them did exceptionally well,” he stated.

“So you can go away with the feeling that something is happening in primary education. That teachers are generally performing with these students and [this doesn’t] only begin at 11 Plus [it] begins down through the system,” he added.

Indicating that the majority of students who sat the exam have been allocated to secondary schools, Jones stated, “To all of our children who will be going off in September to their new schools, I want to wish them the best. All of our schools are equipped to encourage and to foster good learning, once students open themselves to quality teaching, to quality education. Once parents give the students that support that is necessary.”

He meanwhile stressed that the Ministry will not be reallocating students this year to different schools, as there are only so many spaces available at the public secondary schools and allocations have already been made to bring about a balance. (RSM)
