Queen’s College (QC) Deputy Principal, Dr. Marva Lashley (right), presenting a framed photo with signatures and tributes from all of the QC staff to retired English teacher, Randolph Chase, at the Queen’s College Retirement Function on Saturday night at the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa.

Chase praised as credit to teaching profession

Randolph Chase was a teacher who was determined to make a difference especially with those students who could be classified as “difficult” young men.

This was one of the sentiments that was paid to this retired English Teacher of Queen’s College (QC) by Principal David Browne as he gave his tribute to this gentleman during the Queen’s College Retirement Function on Saturday night at the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa.

“I have during the time I have known Mr. Chase at Queen’s College been able to benefit from a peculiar request that he would make. He would always make a request of the all-boys class or some group known to be difficult and he would employ his skills and knowledge to work with that group.”

Chase began teaching in the 1960’s and Dr. Browne said that he first met him when he was a student at the Parkinson Memorial Secondary School, which at that time was known as the Parkinson Comprehensive School.

He then travelled to Bermuda and the Grand Cayman on teaching stints; returning to his homeland and joining the staff at Queen’s College in 2007. Upon seeing him again after so many years, Dr. Browne said that he respected Chase’s passion for Literature and recognising that CAPE Literature was a wonderful subject syllabus, he decided that there was no better person to advocate for this subject than Chase.

“Mr. Randolph Chase started his teaching career in the 1960’s. He taught me in first form at secondary school at Parkinson Comprehensive School. Then he went off to Bermuda and the Grand Cayman on a teaching stint for many years. He returned to Barbados and joined QC in 2007.”

This is why Chase will be a tough act to follow in the English Department at QC, according to Dr. Browne.

“In 2007, I was immediately impressed by his knowledge and interest in Literature. The CAPE Literature in English is a wonderful syllabus and immediately I recognised that there was no better person to champion the syllabus than
Mr. Chase. His knowledge of Literature and his interest in Language will be difficult to replace.” (PJT)
