CCFS students receive Children’s Book Project top prize

Three Christ Church Foundation School (CCFS) pupils were celebrated yesterday when they received the top prize of the Children’s Book Project.

The presentation was done during full assembly at the school. The Project was a contest conducted by the Embassy of the United States of America to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean and the OECS. It was opened to fourth and fifth year students across the island.

Fifth year students – author, Leandra Durant; illustrator and editor, Eden Weekes; and creator of the book’s cover, Jadon Jackman, submitted a 25-page text into the contest entitled, “The Journeyof Bim”.

Speaking during the morning’s assembly, US Ambassador to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean and the OECS, Linda Taglialatela described the book prepared by the fifth years as “truly a creative, skillful and thoughtful book about Barbados.” She said she hoped that it taught them “the importance of history.”

She further stated she found the book “to be very interesting and I learnt a lot about Barbados. I learnt a lot about the history of Barbados and I think it important that if you have the opportunity you should read it too.”

Turning her attention to speak about the competition, Taglialatela said one of the reasons the Embassy “did the book competition is that I really believe that all of you have to know a little bit about our history, know where we came from so we know where we can go. We have to learn a little bit about our country and about other countries, and about the diversity of people.”

She said all entrants were asked to submit books that talked about historical or cultural aspects of Barbados. These had to be written in a way that could be passed down to students in primary grades.

The first place prize, included computers and books, valued at over US$3 000. Presentations were made to Durant, Weekes and Jackman as well as teachers, Agnel Barron and Shirley Branche, who supervised the students, in addition to CCFS Principal, Robert Cumberbatch.

Second and third spots respectively went to The St. Michael School and the Combermere School. (MG)
