CCFS setting high academic & sports goals early

It was a ceremony to celebrate the "elite of the elites”, however the Principal, Robert Cumberbatch, emphasised that the Christ Church Foundation School will be continuing to strive for excellence.

The annual Speech day and Prize Giving ceremony was held on Wednesday at the CCFS auditorium with an audience of parents, past and old scholars, the Board of Management, and proud teachers of the awardees.

During his school report, Cumberbatch said that students will be expected to enroll for three levels of CXC certified examinations, and  (CCSL) Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (in subjects English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Sciences), which is started in second form. On this note, Cumberbatch highlighted the excellent performance of second year students for 2016 who had a 98 pass rate in these exams. In CSEC, the Principal reported that the overall pass rate for Grade One was forty-eight per cent. Although there were good results in English at this level, there was “a dip” in results for English B or English Literature.
However, Cumberbatch said that English students have participated in a number of events, such as the “Toastmasters Speech Training” session, Youth Parliament involvement and the “Barbados Tourism Essay Competition” in the senior category. Students also excelled in areas such as Theatre Arts and Information Technology.

Cumberbatch said the teaching staff and the student body continue to be exposed to technology particularly in the junior schools. This technology can be used to tutor students and Cumberbatch highlighted this fact as well as the need to have infrastructure to facilitate it. “This has implications for the availability of the required technological units [computers and tablets] that are up-to-date and the need for real time connectivity,” said Cumberbatch.

In Sciences, the Principal reported that students are doing well, however, results were mixed as more students were performing better in Spanish rather than French. The Principal attributed this to the Caribbean’s proximity to Spanish speaking territories and the prevalence of Spanish channels on cable television.

The Principal also emphasised the importance of having both academics and sports; highlighting past students Elizabeth Williams (distance runner) and Alex Sobers (swimmer) who were both given scholarships overseas. In addition, he spoke about CCFS being the only school which was represented at the Olympic games this year.

In addition to this, CAPE (Lower Sixth Form) Special Prize winner and Head girl, Azaria Forde, mentioned the school’s success outside of the classroom in areas of Track and Field, Netball, Table Tennis and Cricket. Forde also added the work done within the community such as feeding the homeless, beach clean-ups, entertaining nursery school children, and collecting food for the HIV food bank. (KPB)
