Cave Hill Campus receives two grants from U.S.

THE University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus has secured grant funding of approximately US$65,000 from the United States Embassy in Barbados.
Yesterday, US Ambassador Linda Taglialatela and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Clive Landis signed two agreements which will see entities within UWI – The Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade Law, Policy, and Services (SRC) and The Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management each receive a boost to carry out major initiatives.
Ambassador Taglialatela revealed that the U.S. has committed US$50,000 to the Shridath Ramphal Centre’s education initiative “Revitalizing the U.S. –Caribbean Trade and Investment Agenda” which will bring their institu- tional collaboration to a new level. Through a series of workshops, research, and student-centered partnerships, new possibilities for trade and investment will be unlocked among the United States, Barbados, and the wider Caribbean.
In addition, the Embassy has committed nearly US$15,000 to the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management, an investment which will support the new Caribbean Micro Small Medium Enterprise Centre at the school. The Ambassador recalled that the U.S. Embassy has a long history of supporting entrepreneurship here in Barbados, from its Academy of Women Entrepreneurs to the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative.
“Our partnership with UWI in this area further invests in the innovation and industry of the people of Barbados". Professor Landis said that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding enables one of The UWI’s leading research units – The Shridath Ramphal Centre, and The Cave Hill School of Business to conduct programmes and activities.
“In addition to promoting awareness and understanding of US policies, institutions, and practices affecting and framing US trade and investment strategy and engagement in the Caribbean region, the agreement between the Shridath Ramphal Centre and the US Embassy of Bridgetown aims to stimulate interest in trade and investment opportunities by businesses and the private sector in the Caribbean, in the US including the diaspora; build the research and training capacity of the Caribbean regional academic institutions, with a trade or investment mandate; and to produce policy advice and recommendations for maximising the US-Caribbean trade and investment relationship including areas such as E-commerce, Blue and Green Economy, and Digital Innovation.”
Professor Landis further expressed that the Cave Hill Campus is deeply appreciative of this demonstration of solidarity, and gave the assurance that the institution values highly the strengthening of these bonds between the US and The UWI Cave Hill Campus through the Shridath Ramphal Centre and the Sagicor School of Business and Management.
“We take note that the Caribbean is the United States’ sixth largest trad- ing partner, with $35.5 bil- lion flowing between us each year. In pursuit of our shared objective to enhance the growth and development of regional economies, we are indeed happy to work with the US government and look forward to the programme of collaboration which this MOU will facilitate,” he added.
