For cause and country

awareness of prostate cancer being raised

Raising awareness for prostate cancer whilst celebrating the 50th anniversary of Barbados independence is our goal for Barbados in lieu of our golden jubilee.

Fabian McDowald, Campaign Co-ordinator of the “For Cause and Country” campaign told The Barbados Advocate “It is imperative to note November is the month of Prostate Cancer Awareness and as such the campaign idea ‘For Cause and Country,’ was born.”

“Celebrating fifty years as an independent nation whilst raising awareness and $50,000 in funds for Prostate Cancer. This will be done through the sale of ‘For Cause and Country’ limited edition lapel pins’ which depicts the map of Barbados, the broken trident and the national flower.”

In wearing these pins persons can show their solidarity against prostate cancer and each pin will be a memorabilia of our milestone accomplishment of fifty years of independence for Barbadians living both here and the diaspora.

McDowald added, “To accomplish these objectives we have teamed with The Barbados Cancer Society and Dr. Dorothy Cooke-Johnson. To go another fifty years it is imperative we stop the suffering and death of our men to prostate cancer, so that as a nation we can grow and become stronger and better.”

Dr. Dorothy Cooke-Johnson reiterated McDowald’s viewpoint in the significance of the Cause and Country limited Edition lapel pins and campaign. She enthused, “We are delighted and pleased to be a partner in this campaign which targets an enormously special group of people often overlooked or bypassed by our community.”

She noted, “Annually in October and November, the society turns its efforts to raising awareness for breast cancer awareness, education, early detection, treatment, support and comfort but this year our efforts are centralised on the Golden Jubilee. This beautiful pin ‘For Cause and Country,’ which brilliantly incorporates all our national Symbols.”

“It is my hope every man or woman should have one. It is a point of communication. It sends a message. Prostate cancer is a common enemy of all men and we all need to get together, get a pin, join this comraderie and share the message because cancer is about knowledge and being aware. The men hush up about it but we need to share our story and get the message across.”

On a final note she added, “This pin can do alot against prostate cancer in Barbados. Every prominent man in Barbados needs to have one – from the Governor General, the Prime Minister and other males in our society. They need to lead the way because this pin is a symbol. It is our chance to get this huge message across the whole of Barbados so our men can face up to it, face up to each other and show off the badge which is a beautiful depiction of everything totally Barbadian for this golden jubilee. If we can get it to work it can be a godsend to cancer in Barbados especially for men.”
