Canon Burke: Celebrate Sir Clifford’s life

FORMER Governor General, the late Sir Clifford Husbands’ life was marked by service.

Sir Clifford, who died on October 11, should be remembered for the outstanding contribution he made to the development of the nation.

Delivering the sermon at the state funeral for Sir Clifford yesterday morning, at the St. Lucy Parish Church, Canon Noel Burke recalled that the former head of state – who started his professional career as a teacher, pursued a career as an attorney-at-law, served as the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), acted as Chief Justice of Barbados, and eventually reached the highest office in the land – helped to shape the fabric of society.

He said Sir Clifford played his part in developing the island’s agricultural sector, and was also a dedicated family man who was overprotective of his children Laura, Sandra Dawne Taylor, and Anthony.

Canon Burke told those who gathered to grieve the loss of their loved one, to celebrate the fact that the deceased’s 91 years on earth was dedicated to serving the country he loved and cared about.

He said it is also important to take note that Sir Clifford was a committed Anglican who participated in communion.

“We pray that God Almighty will look upon his work here in the world and grant him a place at the table in his everlasting kingdom...”

“Death is never easy, it raises so many questions. Whether it comes in youth, or in old age, whether it strikes suddenly, or after a long illness, it always leaves loneliness, fear, and longing,” he said.

Canon Burke urged the mourners, as they grieve, to remember that God is always by their side.

On behalf of Diocesan Bishop Dr. John Holder, who was unable to attend the service because he was travelling, Canon Burke expressed condolences to Sir Clifford’s relatives.

“Through his many years of service in Barbados, Sir Clifford made a significant and positive impact upon many persons. We can surely say that he left our country far better than he found it. He was a model for many Barbadians, especially the young.”

“He demonstrated that with commitment and hard work, we can carve out a path in life that can take us to the top of our chosen profession,” Canon Burke said, as he read a message from the Bishop. (AH)
