BWA to focus on a number of projects for 2017

The Barbados Water Authority has a number of projects which it will be continuing or newly embarking on in the year 2017.

According to Chairman of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA), Dr. Atlee Brathwaite, the BWA will be focusing heavily on augmenting the local water supply on water desalination, training and cross training of BWA staff for maximum output and of course, on advancing the BWA’s Smart Meter programme, having installed well over 80,000 Smart meters to date.

“Augmentation of the (water) supply will be continued and we are also investigating areas in which we can source water and we have some big projects that are to do with water desalination,” Dr. Brathwaite said, as he spoke of plans for the year 2017.

“We have two permanent desalination plants, one in the North and one in the South and of course we also have packaged desalination plants, which in the interim, we will be ensuring that salt water is transformed to potable water. We have one at Trents at the moment and the other (at Hope) in St. Peter,” he added.

“Of course the other area that we are looking at is the whole question of the technological innovations to ensure that we get the most out of the Smart Meters that we have installed and also to improve the capability of our staff. By training (our staff) and utilising the new technologies (we have), we will be able to be more responsive to our customers,” Brathwaite further commented.

“The other area is training. We will continue to do training to ensure that our human resources are up to the standards where we can implement the various large projects that we have and to deal with the other technological innovations that we want in the Water Authority (because) we want the Water Authority to be the best it can be,” the BWA Chairman said.
