Botanical Gardens still on the cards
The Government of Barbados is pushing ahead with the development of the National Botanical Gardens at Waterford, St Michael.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley gave this assurance of the beautification project, which is outlined in the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) 2018 manifesto to be a safe habitat for biodiversity, a place of beauty, art, culture, recreation and low impact entertainment.
Eager for its commencement in the new year, Mottley said that she has already met with local landscape architects.
“Over the course of the last ten days or so, I met with all of the Landscape Architects of Barbados for them to come up with a plan for the execution of the National Botanical Gardens which must become a reality starting from the (new) year.”
She made the reveal during the official opening of The Maria Holder Memorial Trust play park at Welchman Hall, St. Thomas, on Friday evening.
“More than a decade ago the Government of Barbados sought to acquire land and did nothing with it. And far from
limiting it to the 250 acres which we have, we want to cross the road into the St Michael East constituency as well on the other side of the road in the Belle to utilise as much of that land,” she told the gathering, which included Minister of Environment and National Beautification Trevor Prescod.
“That entire corridor has now to come alive so that in the same way that people go to huge parks in North America and Europe and enjoy themselves, it is about time that Barbadians be allowed to enjoy the majesty of the beauty of our country. But, we have to put it in a condition for us to enjoy and for us to teach our children beauty and respect of the environment in which we live.” (TL)
