Big plans for Earth Day

The Caribbean Youth Environmental Network (CYEN) has big plans for Earth Day 2017.

Speaking with the media prior to the start of the prize giving for those who would have participated in their games at Agrofest 2017, which was held at Queen’s Park earlier this year, National Coordinator for CYEN, Sade Deane said that one of the areas that they would be concentrating on are the Sustainable Development Goals.

“On April 22nd is Earth Day and last year we embarked on a venture to do environmental awareness and last year we focused on the design of the Paris Agreement and Barbados was one of the countries who signed and we took the time to actually merge the 50th anniversary celebrations as well and so we had 50 lanterns which every company came and lit a lantern but they also pledged and talked about ways that they could improve in terms of climate change and we are going to be embarking this year on doing that again, but we are going to look specifically at the sustainable goals.”

So this [year] is going to involve the Sustainable Development Goals where we are going to have a scavenger hunt. There would be teams of 10 persons each and these teams would have 17 tasks to complete, all of which are related to the Sustainable Development Goals and it would be linked to Bridgetown and its surrounding areas, she continued.

Once they completed all of these 17 tasks, then they would go on to become grand prize winners. In this regard, they are looking for support, both in cash and in kind and that is to help with all of the actual execution of the event as well as for the scavenger hunt.

Since they would like to make this event as momentous, they would be partnering with businesses that would be carrying out some of the goals themselves in their own way.

Persons can register at no cost and once they do this, the CYEN personnel would put them in teams and the time and location are yet to be confirmed, but persons can check out their Facebook page and Twitter page for updates or email them at cyen@gmail to register for the scavenger hunt and acquire any other information.

Dean said that while persons can learn more about the Sustainable Development Goals from off the internet, this opportunity would provide them with an opportunity to do so in a more interactive way and also to interact with the CYEN team. (PJT)
