The Alleyne School tops Co-Operators General Insurance Speak Off Competition

Shamaya Jacob and Janae Marshall of the Alleyne School were the top finalists in the fifth edition of the Co-Operators General Insurance speak off competition.

The finals of the competition was held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation. Shamaya Jacob was declared the winner, Janae Marshall placed second, Rondela Boyce of Frederick Smith Secondary placed third and Angel Springer of Coleridge and Parry Secondary placed fourth.

The other participants were: Mawali Knight (Christ Church Foundation School), Cadeem Knight (Princess Margaret Secondary), Jermessa Khan and Tya Buntin (Ellerslie Secondary).

Jacob delivered passionately against the legalisation of marijuana, whilst her school colleague brought the opposing view and highlighted reasons why marijuana should be legalised. The students were given the opportunity to choose one of two topics – namely, “Should Marijuana be legalised?” or, “How can we prevent the increase of violence in our schools and neighbourhoods?”

Mrs. Cheryl Forde, Human Resources and Marketing Manager of Co-Operators General Insurance, said that she was happy with the interest shown by the secondary schools in the competition now in its fifth year.

Mrs. Forde added that the competition gives the young adults a voice in addressing topical subjects affecting their own lives and the country in general.
